Official Pack 55 Pinewood Derby Rules

NOTE: Every Pack is allowed to set their own rules.  So even if you read or hear of other Packs that have rules different than ours, you must follow our rules.

Eligibility

All Pack 55 Garden State Council, BSA Tigers, Cub Scouts and Webelos are eligible to enter a car in the race.

Official Race Car

Only the Grand Prix Pinewood Derby Kits issued by Pack 55 are allowed to enter.  If you need a replacement kit contact your den leader.  You must use the block of wood, axels, and wheels from this kit.  You may not purchase any body, wheels, or axels from retail stores or the internet even if they say BSA Approved.

Wheels and axles

Only the wheels and  axles  that came in your Pack 55 issued kit are  permitted. Wheels may be lightly sanded to remove mold burrs.  This light sanding is the only wheel modification allowed.  Axles may be polished.  Beveling, tapering, thinning, perforating, milling or any other altering of the shape or performance of the wheels or axels is not permitted.  Wheel bearings, washers or bushings are not permitted. The car shall not ride on any type of springs.  The car must be free-wheeling with no starting device or other propulsion devices.

Notched Designs

Any car with a notched or forked front end, must have a bar across the front, level with the BOTTOM of the car.  Your car may not rest beyond the starting pin before launch.  It also may not have a groove or cut out that allows it to begin rolling before the pin has fully dropped.

General Race Car Construction

Design, paint colors, decals, etc. are up to you, the designer and builder. Don’t put number(s) on your car. Numbers will be put on when the car is registered on Saturday morning.  All cars must meet the specifications outlined below to be permitted in the race.

Length, Width and Clearances

  • Maximum length shall not exceed 7”
  • Maximum overall width (including wheels and axles) shall not exceed 2-3/4”
  • Minimum width between wheels shall be 1-3/4” so car will clear the center guide strip.
  • Minimum clearance between the bottom of the car and the track shall be 3/8” so the car will clear the center guide strip.

Cars will be measured at weigh-in.

Weight

Weight shall not exceed 5 ounces.  The reading of the official race scale will be final.  The car may be hollowed out and built up to the maximum weight by the addition of wood, plastic, rubber or metal only, provided it is securely built into the body or firmly attached to it.  No loose materials of any kind are permitted on or inside the car.  Details such as steering wheel, driver, spoiler, etc. are allowed as long as they do not exceed the maximum car length, width and weight.

Lubrication

Only dry powdered lubricants, such as graphite or white powder Pinewood Derby Car lubricant may be used.  Any lubrication must be performed prior to registration/inspection.

Inspections and Car Adjustments

Each car must pass inspection at registration before it can compete.  The race officials have the right to disqualify cars which do not meet these rules.  Car adjustments on disqualified cars may be made and the car reinspected only until the start of the race.  Race officials have the right to allow minor adjustments to cars during the course of the race.

Prizes

Trophies and prizes will be awarded for each den level. In addition to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, prizes will be awarded in each den level for each of the following categories:

  • Funniest Car
  • Best Paint Job
  • Coolest Car
  • Den Leader’s Choice

There are also 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place trophies for the Championship round.
